Every piece of advice in the guides has a source and an evidence level. Here we explain how we chose the sources, what the levels mean, what people search for most on Google and what our guides do not yet cover.

How we proceeded

Six steps from the regulation to the evidence label

  1. Regulations. We read the wording of Act no. 216/2018 Coll. and Decree no. 381/2018 Coll. on slov-lex.sk and refer to the sections.
  2. Official sources. We took prices, membership and fees from the pages of the Slovak Anglers' Union and from the slovensko.sk portal.
  3. Scientific papers and tests. For mortality in catch and release, nutrients from bait and knot strength we looked for peer-reviewed papers and measurements, and we state how big the sample is.
  4. What people ask. We looked at Google Trends and Google Autocomplete in Slovakia and abroad to learn what people ask about.
  5. Evidence level. Each source has been given a level and it is displayed with claims.
  6. Unsupported claims. What we could not verify, we labeled as practice or unverified, or left out.

Evidence levels

How to read the labels on claims

LevelWhat it means
RegulationThe binding text of the Act or Decree.
Official sourceInformation from an authority, a ministry or the Slovak Anglers' Union.
StudyA peer-reviewed scientific paper or a summary of several papers.
A test with a small sampleA measurement or test with a small number of trials; the result is only indicative.
Secondary sourceA news, expert or encyclopedic article, not a primary source.
PracticeExperience of anglers and manufacturers without scientific proof. Use it as a starting point, not as the truth.
Search dataRelative interest on Google. It tells us what people search for, not what is true.
UnverifiedA bibliographic entry; we did not open the text, so we claim nothing from it.

What people search for on Google

Observation from 6 Nov 2026

Search dataThe data from Google Trends are relative interest from 0 to 100, not a number of searches. For rarely searched terms the data are sparse and values close to zero are not reliable.

Relative interest in Google Trends (6 Nov 2026). Values from a single comparison of terms
AreaTermRelative interest

The other Slovak terms compared had values close to zero. Interest in the fishing license peaked from late December to early January (28 Dec – 11 Jan) and around 15 March. We do not know the cause; for example, the peak around New Year may be related to the renewal of annual licenses. It is only an assumption.

We used Google Autocomplete suggestions only as an aid in wording the questions so that they sound the way people ask. They are not a measurement and change by place and time (Google Autocomplete).

Limitations and what we do not know

Where our guides are weak

  • Wording of the regulations. We read the wording of the Act from 1 Jan 2022 and of the Decree from 1 Jan 2019; we found no newer wording. A newer wording may exist. The binding text is on slov-lex.sk.
  • Amendment from 1 Jan 2027. An electronic license and permit through a mobile app is, according to Právne noviny, only a draft. We did not find the number of the bill and did not verify its validity.
  • Prices. Prices of permits and fees change every year. The data are from the price list for 2026.
  • An exam for the license. In the text of the Act that we read, an exam is not a condition for issuing a license. The SRZ requires an exam for membership. If you want to be sure, ask the office.
  • Night fishing. The Act has two wordings that diverge. We show both and refer to the district's regulations.
  • Studies and tests. Knot strength measurements have small samples. We did not open the work of Kasumyan and Døving (2003) and claim nothing from it.
  • Sources read through a tool. We read the texts of some pages through an automatic tool that summarizes them. For legal data we therefore recommend verifying the binding wording.
  • Fines. The range of €100 to €1,000 (individuals) and €500 to €15,000 (legal entities and businesses) is according to the list we read. The list may not be complete.

Frequently asked questions

8 questions with short answers. Expand the one you are interested in.

How do you verify the information in the guides?

We take legal claims from the text of Act no. 216/2018 Coll. and Decree no. 381/2018 Coll. on slov-lex.sk and give the section. We take prices and membership from the SRZ pages and from slovensko.sk. For scientific tips we state the study or test and the sample size.

What we could not verify we label as practice or unverified.

What do the evidence levels mean?

A regulation is the binding text of an Act or a Decree. An official source is information from an authority or the SRZ. A study is a peer-reviewed work. A small-sample test is an indicative measurement. A secondary source is an article or an encyclopedia. Practice is the experience of anglers without proof. Search data speak of interest, not of truth. Unverified is a figure whose text we did not open.

Which wording of the Act do you rely on?

We read the wording of Act no. 216/2018 Coll. on fisheries in force from 1 Jan 2022 and of Decree no. 381/2018 Coll. in force from 1 Jan 2019. We found no newer wording, but one may exist. The binding wording is on slov-lex.sk. The data status is as of 6 Nov 2026.

How do I check the binding wording of the Act?

You will find the binding wording on slov-lex.sk in the Collection of Laws under number 216/2018 (Act) and 381/2018 (Decree). For a specific district, the fishing regulations and the permit from the district user also apply.

Is this guide legal advice?

No. These are general information with sources. In the event of a fine, a dispute or an unclear interpretation, turn to the district user, the authority or a lawyer.

What do people search for most about fishing?

According to Google Trends from 6 Nov 2026, in Slovakia the greatest interest was in the term "rybársky lístok" (fishing license) (6.8) and "lovná miera" (minimum size) (4.1); the other compared terms had values close to zero. Worldwide, the greatest interest was in "fishing license" (49.4), then "catch and release" (5.5) and "boilies" (3.5). This is relative interest, not a number of searches.

Why do you label some tips as practice?

For gear, techniques and boilie preparation we found no peer-reviewed work that would confirm the advice. They come from anglers' experience and from descriptions in specialist web sources, so they have the evidence level practice. Use them as a starting point, not as proof.

How often are the guides updated?

The guides change with the release of new versions of the portal. Each page shows the date of the status and, for sources, the date we opened them. Prices and regulations may change sooner, so verify important data yourself as well.
