About the species Gudgeon

How to recognise it

Small cylindrical fish with a lower mouth, one pair of barbels at the corners of the mouth and a row of dark spots on the sides.

Where it lives

Gravel and sandy beds of rivers, streams and reservoirs, mostly in shoals near the bottom.

What it feeds on

Small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms and molluscs.

Spawning

From April to June; it sticks its eggs to gravel and plants.

It takes readily on a small hook with a worm. You can tell it from the stone loach by the number of barbels: the gudgeon has two, the loach six.
