About the species Giant hogweed

About the species

An invasive plant that grows along stream banks and on wet meadows. In sunlight its sap causes skin burns.

Where to find it by the water

Riverbanks, roadsides and damp meadows, where it forms dense stands up to four metres tall.

What this means for anglers

Avoid it by the bank; contact with the sap in the sun causes burns.

How to protect yourself

Do not touch it and do not walk through the growth. If the sap gets on your skin, wash it off with water and soap and protect the spot from the sun. See a doctor for a larger burn.

When it is observed

Records by month in the areas around the fishing districts (GBIF).

In November the species is observed less than in the main season. Most records are from July.

The records come from people's observations and also reflect when and where observers move around. They are not a measurement of numbers or a guarantee of an encounter.

Where it was recorded

Fishing districts around which a record of this species exists. Sorted by number of records.

1,079 fishing districts in total, 36 shown. The number next to a fishing district is the number of records around it. Show on map
