About the species Ruffe

How to recognise it

It resembles a perch but is smaller, with one continuous dorsal fin with spines at the front, large eyes and a mottled olive-brown colouring covered in mucus.

Where it lives

Deeper pockets of rivers, reservoirs and lakes with a slow current, near the bottom.

What it feeds on

Insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and the eggs of other fish.

Spawning

From March to May; it lays eggs on stones, plants and sand.

When removing it, watch out for the sharp spines of the dorsal fin. It takes a worm near the bottom and is often caught while fishing for other species.
