About the species European pond turtle

About the species

The only native turtle in Slovakia. It lives in standing and slow waters with a soft bottom.

Where to find it by the water

Oxbows, wetlands and ponds with access to sunny banks. Basks on logs in the water.

What this means for anglers

It is very rare and protected. If it happens to be hooked, release it carefully and do not leave the line tangled. Report the sighting to the nature conservation authority.

When it is observed

Records by month in the areas around the fishing districts (GBIF).

In November the species is observed less than in the main season. Most records are from May.

The records come from people's observations and also reflect when and where observers move around. They are not a measurement of numbers or a guarantee of an encounter.

Where it was recorded

Fishing districts around which a record of this species exists. Sorted by number of records.

351 fishing districts in total, 36 shown. The number next to a fishing district is the number of records around it. Show on map
