About the species Grass snake

About the species

A harmless snake with two yellow spots on the nape. It swims well and hunts frogs, fish and newts.

Where to find it by the water

Pond banks, oxbows and damp meadows by the water. It is often seen swimming with its head above the water.

What this means for anglers

It is not venomous and will not harm people. When disturbed it may release a foul-smelling liquid or play dead. Do not harm it; it is protected. Do not confuse it with the adder: the adder has a zigzag band on its back and vertical pupils.

When it is observed

Records by month in the areas around the fishing districts (GBIF).

In November the species is observed less than in the main season. Most records are from May.

The records come from people's observations and also reflect when and where observers move around. They are not a measurement of numbers or a guarantee of an encounter.

Where it was recorded

Fishing districts around which a record of this species exists. Sorted by number of records.

1,400 fishing districts in total, 36 shown. The number next to a fishing district is the number of records around it. Show on map
