About the species Common viper

About the species

A venomous snake that basks on rocky slopes, in wetlands and at forest edges near water.

Where to find it by the water

Rocky slopes, forest edges, peat bogs and damp meadows by streams, mainly in the mountains. It usually basks on stones.

What this means for anglers

It is shy, and bites rarely happen. Be careful on stony banks.

How to protect yourself

It is shy and bites only when threatened. On stony banks do not reach with your hand between the stones, and wear sturdy footwear. After a bite stay calm, do not move the affected limb and call 112.

When it is observed

Records by month in the areas around the fishing districts (GBIF).

In November the species is observed less than in the main season. Most records are from May.

The records come from people's observations and also reflect when and where observers move around. They are not a measurement of numbers or a guarantee of an encounter.
