About the species Great egret

About the species

A large white heron that hunts fish and frogs in the shallows. In Slovakia its numbers are rising, and in winter it can also be seen by watercourses.

Where to find it by the water

Shallow banks of ponds, wetlands, rivers and wet meadows. In winter it stays by water that does not freeze.

What this means for anglers

It hunts small fish near the bank, so you can see it where there is a shallow with small fish.

When it is observed

Records by month in the areas around the fishing districts (GBIF).

In November the species is commonly observed. Most records are from May.

The records come from people's observations and also reflect when and where observers move around. They are not a measurement of numbers or a guarantee of an encounter.

Where it was recorded

Fishing districts around which a record of this species exists. Sorted by number of records.

1,400 fishing districts in total, 36 shown. The number next to a fishing district is the number of records around it. Show on map
