About the species Brown bear

About the species

Lives in the mountain forests of northern and central Slovakia. Near water it hunts fish and drinks.

Where to find it by the water

Mountain forests, especially Tatras, Fatra, Low Tatras, Poľana and eastern Slovakia. It comes to streams to drink and to hunt fish.

What this means for anglers

In mountain districts expect to meet them. Do not leave fish and bait scraps by the tent.

How to protect yourself

In mountain districts move noisily, do not leave fish, offal or bait scraps by your tent, and store food away from where you sleep. If you see a bear, do not run, talk calmly and back away slowly. Never approach the young.

When it is observed

Records by month in the areas around the fishing districts (GBIF).

In November the species is observed less than in the main season. Most records are from June.

The records come from people's observations and also reflect when and where observers move around. They are not a measurement of numbers or a guarantee of an encounter.

Where it was recorded
