About the species Eurasian otter

About the species

It hunts fish, crayfish and frogs. It is strictly protected, and its presence is considered a sign of fairly clean water with plenty of fish.

Where to find it by the water

Clean rivers, streams, ponds and wetlands with dense bankside vegetation. It is active mainly at dusk and at night, so it is rarely seen. It is betrayed by tracks in the mud and droppings (piles) on stones.

What this means for anglers

The otter hunts fish, but it is protected and is part of the picture of clean waters. Do not disturb it near burrows and do not leave fish unattended by the water.
