About the species Raccoon dog

About the species

A canid from East Asia that has spread across Europe and is invasive. Near water it hunts for frogs, fish, bird eggs and mollusks.

Where to find it by the water

Wetlands, pond banks and floodplain forests. It is active mainly at night.

What this means for anglers

It can transmit rabies and parasites. Do not feed it or approach it, and if it behaves unusually, notify the area manager or the animal protection authority.

When it is observed

Records by month in the areas around the fishing districts (GBIF).

In November the species is observed less than in the main season. Most records are from July.

The records come from people's observations and also reflect when and where observers move around. They are not a measurement of numbers or a guarantee of an encounter.
